It’s Sunday Funday, and what does that mean? It means we have a lucky new winner for the third Sunday Scribble Challenge, and a brand NEW challenge to build those writing muscles!
Voting polls are now open for #SSC 4. I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t our liveliest challenge, with only two submissions. *insert cricket chirping* Where were you guys, anyway? Was the challenge too long?? I did promise to keep these things short and sweet, after all. (That’s why this week’s challenge is going to be whittled down to ONE sentence. ‘Cause we can all do that.)
BUT we still need a winner for #SSC 4, so we’ve opened the voting to EVERYONE, regardless of whether you entered the challenge or not! Did you hear that? That means YOU can vote! Email: Sundayscribblechallenge@gmail.com. Place the lucky author’s name in the HEADER of your email.
The winner for the third Scribbles on Cocktail Napkins Sunday Scribble Challenge (and the one with the MOST submissions to date) is Ah Dad: Devoted husband, loving dad, business traveler, fitness fanatic wannabe, blogger, enthusiastic twittee, and laugher of life.
The prompt for that week?
In just two sentences, provide your reader with a subtle clue to reveal your character is LYING.
The winning submission:
“It wasn’t me”, cried Jimmy, as he stood with hanging shoulders next to the shattered cookie jar on the floor. If only he took the time to wipe his mouth before Mom stormed into the kitchen.
Thank you for rocking the challenge, Ah Dad! While I did a little rooting around your blog for your name, I came up empty. What is your name anyway? Do you have a secret identity? Is your secret identity Batman? Boy, that would be a twist.
(Okay, maybe it’s Pieter) ANYWAY, Pieter, I’d like to invite you and/or your work to be featured in an upcoming post on Scribbles on Cocktail Napkins. This can be done in whatever way you like. A reblog, a guest blog, a new interview about a favorite project, or even a small sample of your latest book along with a purchasing link. You decide!
Now, without any further ado, let’s get to our next Scribble Challenge!! Here’s the ONE SENTENCE prompt (as promised) for the next challenge:
A six word story might seem a little impossible. But, it’s not! Check out one of the most famous six word stories of all time, written by Ernest Hemmingway–
For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn.
Here are a few other examples to get your brain in gear:
“Rapunzel! I am slipping! A wig?!”
Misleadingly deep puddle. Curious child missing.
“I love you, too,” she lied.
Artificial limb, bungie jump-bad idea.
The Rules for this challenge? You have six days to ruminate if you need them. (But you shouldn’t, ’cause it’s a six word story, mmmkay?) Post one submission to the prompt in the comment section below. The deadline? Saturday, April 30th @noon Atlantic Daylight Time.
- Encourage other Scribblers. Try to comment (reply) to at least three other submissions during the week.
- After the deadline, VOTE for your favorite submission by emailing: Sundayscribblechallenge@gmail.com. Place the lucky author’s name in the HEADER of your email.

Sorry about last week, I just couldn’t think of something. Was a hard week. Congrats Ah Dad! Now let’s see if I can come up with something for this one. Six words, eh? Hmmmm….. Ok here is mine……..
Stormy night. Checked in Hotel California.

LOVE that song.
Great entry!
Thanks for making your way back to the challenge, it’s always great to see you here.
Looking forward to your guest blog on Tuesday, Jackie!!

Thanks! Good to be back as I really enjoy your challenges. Hotel California is one of my favorite songs and for some reason it popped into my head this morning. 🙂

this is screaming to be a short story someday

Seems plausible to me! A lot of stories I write in Eneana involve either spellbooks or tragic accidents. It’s only a matter of time before the two are combined. 😉

I don’t think I would have even needed to see your Gravatar to know you wrote this, Joy! Your writing style is so distinctive, even in six short words. Great entry, and good to see you back.

Funny how six words can make a person wonder . . .
Was he simply lying about being innocent? Or, did she find some evidence that just made him look guilty?
Well done. You’ve created a bit of a mystery here.

When I really, really get into a book, this is sometimes how I feel. The good ones just seem to whisk you away, don’t they?
This little snippet reminds me of The Neverending Story: one of my all time faves.
Great submission.

I hadn’t even thought about The Neverending Story, but I used to love that movie growing up! Does it hold up watching it as an adult? This challenge took me longer to think of. Amazing how less words is more difficult to write. 🙂

I’m still in a state of shock. And that’s not my submission by the way, as it is 7 words. It’s the simple truth! Thanks for all the votes. I feel like an Idols finalist.

I’ve noticed some interesting similarities in the submissions to these challenges. It seems that quite a few authors like the idea of cannibalistic characters.
I blame The Walking Dead.
Great take on the challenge.
Congratulations again on last week’s win! It’s great to see you so amped up over your victory. Now we’re all waiting on bated breath for your guest post, Batman. I mean Ah Dad. Pieter.

Found you through Pieter’s big win. He’s some proud. Though I think he even happier that you called him Batman 🙂

Hey, Stomperdad–
Glad to see you found your way over! It’s good to see new participants in the challenge.
Now, I wonder if the visit with Grandma was good or bad . . .
Could go either way really. I can see it now: a little girl playing with dolls in her room while Grandma’s ghostly, rotting form creeps up behind her.
OR MAYBE: a grown man facing his inner demons finds strength in the ghost of his Grandmother . . .
Well, you got my wheels turning, anyway! Nicely done.
I wish I hadn’t blown Ah Dad’s Batman cover. Catwoman won’t stop asking me where he lives.

HAHA! Or perhaps it’s a little boy who wished he’d known his grandmother because she died before he was born. She heard his wish and they are now best buds? So many directions. I’ve been reading AhDad’s (Pieter) blog for a while. He’s great! Always good for a laugh.

This could be interpreted in so many ways. I see it as an apocalyptic thriller. OR, maybe just a statement regarding the current state of civilization around us. Either way, it’s a great six words.
